Min. wage is not high enough. An actual living wage is about $12.00 (depending on where you are living in the country), but that should be the absolute lowest wages. Maybe it is not feasible, and I am not an economist, but it is a moral issue (much like healthcare).

I agree with you on the generalized living wage, and would like to see everyone making an honest living paid accordingly. I have other reservations, mostly concerning federally mandated anything, that detach my opinions on living wage from minimum wage.

I commented on this on the new AC Radio already, but whatever, I’m bored.

The only people required to carry papers under the Arizona law are aliens. The only papers they are required to have the papers federal immigration law already requires them to carry. All this law really does in the paper-carrying regard is instructs police officers to check for compliance with federal law.

Also, some of other sections of the law that have gotten virtually no attention do in fact target employers and punishes them for knowingly hiring illegal aliens.

I don’t want to sound like a complete jackass here, but have you read the law? If not, it’s only 20 pages (of jumbo type), and doesn’t really contain that much legalese. http://www.azleg.gov/alispdfs/council/SB1070-HB2162.PDF

Donika, That problem comes back to the lack of efficiency (ie: the “fattened middle” that Philadelphia Lawyer talks about). I’m in the epicenter of this excess right now in Washington D.C. where it seems like half the people are seatwarmers for the federal government and the other half are management consultants, who really don’t do anything. D.C. is a great place for fancy titles though. The last place I interviewed at the people interviewing me were all 23 years old and all “Directors” of this or that.

I work in construction and I constantly see illegal Mexicans working jobs that many Americans would love to have. Drywall, spackling, laying tile & carpet, even carpentry. These jobs used to be taken by card carrying Union workers charging $75 / hr. Union workers who have had years of experience, have been an apprentice to a master of the trade, and take OSHA courses and have certifications that prove they do the work properly and safely. Now you have illegal workers, who don’t speak English, who have zero safety training, building new structures, houses, office buildings, etc etc etc. This is NOT safe.

The myth that these illegal’s only work jobs Americans wont take is completely wrong. The problem is when a Union guy costs $75/hr because he has to pay for his own health insurance, workers insurance, and union dues, plus general overhead, they are just too expensive, when you can pay a Mexican $8/hr. So yeah, Ben is right you have to go after the employers, not the individual illegal aliens.

To say this Law is racist is just pathetic. These people broke the law, they are here illegally, its nto racist to find them and enforce the federal laws they are already breaking. /end rant
