No show this week

by Corman

Due to the blizzard that buried the East Coast and the resulting travel difficulties, we won’t be doing an episode of AC Radio this week. If my traffic stats are any indication, most of you are on holiday from the Internet anyway and won’t be reading this note.

But for those of you who are around, you can do me a favor. I’ve installed a new social bookmarking plugin and it’s lonely. So find a short story, a radio episode, an xmas letter that you particularly like and go ahead and click one of those icons to share it with the world (the plugin only appears on individual posts, so you won’t see it if you’re looking at this on the main page. Magic, I know). Since I do all this for free and you don’t even have to suffer the indignity of advertising on this site, we’ll call this your xmas gift to me.

And if I’ve never written anything you particularly like, no harm. But for the rest of you, why not share something you like with your facebook or twitter?

Or if you have a suggestion or a comment or just want to tell me that I’m a giant sucking chest wound in your otherwise perfect day, I’ll leave the comments of this entry open.

No show due to travel difficulties because of the snow? Who exactly has to travel anywhere outside of their home to create this podcast?

It’s not a matter of traveling to do the show. It’s a matter of returning from holiday travel.

The problem probably isn’t that your listeners don’t like your stuff enough to share, but instead that your listeners are too lame to have anyone to share it with.

My 37 cats are all huge fans though.

Stuff gets shared around. Not as much as I’d like obviously, but it does. This was a first, baby step, in getting comfortable promoting myself, which I have a terribly hard time doing.

I’m a few months from a new edition of S&KS coming out and I’ve realized that if I want this book to have any sort of success I have to stop being a douchebag and actually put some effort into promoting it. I haven’t had any sort of discussions with my publisher yet but I’ve reached out to a few friends who have experience with book launches. I want to start putting a plan together now so that when the book is ready and I start having those discussions with the publisher, I’ll have an idea of what I’m doing.

I don’t expect to get rich of S&KS. I would like to use it as a first step toward getting to a place where I can write full time. If that’s going to happen, I have to stop being afraid of promoting the book, myself and this website.

I have the same trepidation about promotion. In a perfect world people could just spend their time creating great content and be recognized purely by it’s merits, but that shit isn’t ever going to happen. If Poe, Melville, and Toole can die in at least semi-obscurity it’s obvious that you have to put the time in promoting your own stuff. Good luck finding the balls to do it. I think I would rather have rusty nails jabbed into my eyes than have to talk-up my own stuff.

I’m excited for the S&KS re-realease though. I can think of a couple people that should really enjoy it, so I will definitely order a couple copies and send it their way.

I have tried to plug this blog (and other blogs) that I
enjoy on a few online communities that I belong to. Your stuff is
good (for lack of more eloquent phrasing) and once you “tip” it
will all be over.
